Friday 4/23/1988: Lenny Dykstra (FAY) will miss 6 weeks
FAYETTEVILLE - Fayetteville's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, centerfielder Lenny Dykstra, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 6 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Anterior Cruciate Ligament which will require surgery. While compiling an on base percentage of .369, Lenny hit .232 and slugged .377. He has collected 11 runs batted in this year.
 
Thursday 4/22/1988: St. Louis has no chance in a 2-hitter by Greg Maddux
ST. LOUIS - South Carolina's right-hander Greg Maddux didn't look unexperienced at all. The 22 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against St. Louis, recording his 2nd shutout of the season. Maddux (2-0) struck out 8 and walked none, throwing 62 of 103 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' South Carolina's rightfielder Dave Henderson stroked 4 hits in 4 AB, homering twice, hitting 2 doubles, scoring three times and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Maddux. South Carolina improved its record to 9-8, scoring 10 runs on 13 hits.
 
Monday 4/19/1988: Player of the Week honors go to Burr and Bell
Corey Burr from Winnipeg wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the Ruth League. Corey was on fire, hitting .520 with 4 HR and 18 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! South Carolina's rightfielder George Bell had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the Aaron League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .538 and hit .520, while driving in 11 runs. He has hit 5 taters while batting .469 this season. His 23 hits and 5 walks add up to a .519 on-base percentage. He's 1st in the Aaron League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 7th in RBI!
 
Saturday 4/17/1988: Asbury Park's Andre Dawson gets the cycle
ASBURY PARK - Asbury Park's centerfielder Andre Dawson once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Emerald Isle's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Saturday. A single in the 2nd off Mark Langston accounted for his 1st hit. In the 3rd inning he belted a RBI double off Mark Langston. In the 5th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Mark Langston. A pitch from Joe Boever in the 7th inning left his bat for a triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Andre scored 4 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 18 hits in 50 at bats, resulting in a .360 batting average. 48 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Andre. On 4/4/1988, Rafael Palmeiro was the last player to hit for the cycle.
 
Thursday 4/15/1988: Nelson Kelly (COR) will miss 6 weeks
CORONADO - Coronado's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, leftfielder Nelson Kelly, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 6 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Inflamed Anterior Cruciate Ligament which will require surgery.
 
Wednesday 4/14/1988: Oakville's Wilson out for 4-5 weeks
OAKVILLE - Oakville's leftfielder Willie Wilson will miss about 4-5 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 3rd inning of the game between Oakville and South Carolina. He dove for a drive off the bat of Rafael Santana, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Fractured Ulna. Surgery will be performed next week.
 
Monday 4/12/1988: Coronado's Horner wins Player of the Week award
The Ruth League's best player of the week was Philadelphia's Alvin Davis, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. Alvin went 11 for 24 (.458), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 9 RBI. The Aaron League's best player of the week was Coronado's Bob Horner, who wins the award for the 8th time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .567 and hit .500, while driving in 14 runs. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well!
 
Thursday 4/8/1988: Oaktown has no chance in a 2-hitter by Bruce Ruffin
VANCOUVER - It was a great day for Vancouver's left-hander Bruce Ruffin. The 24-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Oaktown on Thursday. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Ruffin (1-0) struck out 3 and walked 1, throwing 55 of 88 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Vancouver was leftfielder Bobby Bonilla, he went 2 for 3, homering twice, scoring 2 runs and driving in 3 runs. Vancouver scored 7 runs on 12 hits.
 
Sunday 4/4/1988: Rafael Palmeiro hits for the cycle against St. Louis
ST. LOUIS - Kentucky's first baseman Rafael Palmeiro once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up St. Louis' pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Sunday. In the 1st inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Tim Belcher. His 2nd hit was a double off Tim Belcher in the 3rd inning. A single in the 5th off Tim Belcher accounted for his 3rd hit. Hit number 4 followed in the 8th inning, a triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Rafael scored 2 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 4 hits in 4 at bats, resulting in a 1.000 batting average. He's now the 47th player in league history to hit for the cycle! Kirby Puckett was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 8/31/1987.
