Saturday 6/26/1991: Randy Johnson (OAK) will miss 5 weeks OAKTOWN - When it rains, it pours. Oaktown's left-hander Randy Johnson will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Orlando where he left the field in the 1st inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Bone Chips Elbow which will require surgery. Friday 6/18/1991: Bip Roberts out for 9 weeks BROOKLYN - Brooklyn's second baseman Bip Roberts will miss at least 9 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Roberts was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Calf Muscle. Roberts has walked 20 times this year and posts a .327 OBP. While batting .271, 68 for 251, he has driven in 44 runs. |

The 24-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Portland on Tuesday. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Wayne Tolleson singled with one out in the 5th inning. Burba (5-6) fanned 5 and walked none, throwing 93 pitches. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Saturday 6/5/1991: Jesse Barfield homers three times against North Shore NORTH SHORE - Jesse Barfield can hit'em a long way, and North Shore pitchers couldn't smile about that today. Emerald Isle's rightfielder unloaded three bombs, adding to his reputation of being one of the best power hitters in the game. In the 1st inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Don August. His 2nd shot, a two-run homerun off James Slusher in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in right field. A pitch from Wayne Rosenthal in the 7th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 437 feet from home plate in center field. Overall he went 5 for 5, hitting a double, scoring FIVE times and collecting 5 RBI. His homerun total this year is 21, along with 49 RBI. Tuesday 6/1/1991: Kentucky's Gooden named Pitcher of the Month Millbrae's Steve Trout had a terrific May, and it earned him the Ruth League Pitcher of the month award. He went 6-0 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 1.77. He struck out 31 in 45.2 innings. Steve pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .248 against Steve this season. While posting an ERA of 3.08 he went 7-2 in 12 starts, fanning 55 and walking 14 hitters. Steve has pitched one shutout and one complete game. He's 3rd in the Ruth League in ERA and 2nd in wins! The best month of May in the Aaron League certainly had Kentucky's right-hander Dwight Gooden, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He struck out 60 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 5-0 while pitching 60 innings. His ERA in May was 0.60. In the 1st of the game against Brooklyn he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Tricep Muscle. Friday 4/16/1991: Deadwood's Jay Buhner has great day, hits three longballs WINNIPEG - Deadwood beat Winnipeg 14-1, but that was not the real story of the game. Jay Buhner was, as he went deep three times. Number 1 in the 1st inning, a shot estimated at 363 feet, cleared the wall in right field. His 2nd shot, off Dave Eiland in the 2nd inning, was a GRAND SLAM and cleared the fence in center field. A pitch from Reggie Patterson in the 7th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 367 feet from home plate in right field. Overall he stroked 5 hits in 6 AB, doubling once, with FIVE runs scored with 8 RBI. His homerun total this year is 8, along with 20 RBI. |
Wednesday 4/14/1991: Roger Clemens dominates Portland, gives up just one hit EMERALD ISLE - Roger Clemens took the mound and never left. And Portland hitters couldn't touch him at all. Emerald Isle's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 35 career shutouts in 239 games started. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Clemens (2-1) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking none, throwing 105 pitches. The hitting star for Emerald Isle was catcher Rich Gedman, he finished 3 for 5, homering twice, stroking a double, scoring two runs with 4 RBI. Emerald Isle scored 11 runs on 15 hits. |
Monday 4/12/1991: Gary Gaetti parks three against Durham DURHAM - Gary Gaetti powered Fayetteville to a 14-10 win over Durham. He did it in style by homering three times. His 1st shot, a GRAND SLAM off Joel Davis in the 4th inning, cleared the fence in right field. His 2nd shot, off Arnold Faulkner in the 6th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. In the 7th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Dave Gumpert. Overall he finished with 3 hits in 6 AB, scoring three times and collecting 7 RBI. |
Monday 4/12/1991: Belle (LA) and McGriff (CHA) win P.O.W. award The Ruth League's best player of the week was Los Angeles' Albert Belle, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .469 and hit .393, while driving in 12 runs. His season numbers are: .406 AVG, 13 hits, 3 doubles, one triple and 6 homeruns, along with 14 RBI and 10 runs scored. He's 8th in the Ruth League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The Player of the Week award in the Aaron League goes to Charlotte's Fred McGriff this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .654 and hit .526, while driving in 14 runs. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. |
Sunday 4/4/1991: Randy Johnson shuts out Vancouver on one hit OAKTOWN - Randy Johnson had his best stuff going, and Vancouver hitters had nothing to cheer about. Oaktown's left-hander pitched a 1-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. Johnson (1-0) struck out an astounding 15 and walked 2, throwing 70 of 111 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' The hitting star for Oaktown was catcher Mike Lavalliere, he went 1 for 4. Oaktown scored 2 runs on 5 hits. |
